After searching patterns for watch caps, or knit winter hats, I put together these instructions :
Size 8 needles, 4 ply worsted yarn
Cast on 86 stitches (77 sts. for 8 or 10 yr. old child’s size)
Knit 1, purl 1 across.
Repeat pattern for 11 inches (10 in. for child’s hat)
Knit 2 together, across row
Purl row
Knit 2 together, across row

When a handful of stitches remain…cut yarn away from the skein you are working with, thread needle and gather through remaining stitches. Leave enough of a tail to use later to sew side of hat.
Then take needle, and thread with yarn from beginning, cast-on edge. (lower edge of hat)
Put wrong sides of hat together, as it will appear when worn.
Stitch up 3 inches of headband area. (when band is folded up, tied off area will be hidden).
Put right sides of hat together and stitch together from the top, down to the band area.Tie the two pieces of yarn together, from body of hat and from turned up band area. You can weave in the yarn; but it’s not necessary. When the band is folded up it doesn’t show at all.
